Railway application – Fire protection on railway vehicles
EN 45545-1 and EN 45545-2 standards (Railway applications - Fire protection on railway vehicles) specify the reaction-to-fire performance requirements for materials and products used on railway vehicles.
In particular, EN 45545-1 defines the operation categories and the design categories for the products used on railway vehicles.
Operation categories
Operation category 1: vehicles that are not designed or equipped to run on underground sections, tunnels and/or elevated structures and which may be stopped with minimum delay, after which immediate side evacuation to a place of ultimate safety is possible.
Operation category 2: vehicles that are designed or equipped to run on underground sections, tunnels and/or elevated structures, and where there are stations or emergency stations reachable within a short running time.
Operation category 3: vehicles that are designed or equipped to run on underground sections, tunnels and/or elevated structures, and where there are stations or emergency stations reachable within a long running time.
Operation category 4: vehicles that are designed or equipped to run on underground sections, tunnels and/or elevated structures, without side evacuation available.
Design categories
Railway vehicles are classified under the following design categories:
A: vehicles forming part of an automatic train and having no emergency trained staff on board.
D: double decked vehicles
S: sleeping and couchette vehicles
N: all other vehicles (standard vehicles).
Based on these operation and design categories, three 'hazard levels' are assigned, according to the table below.
Design Category:
Operation Category: | N | A | D | S |
1 | HL1 | HL1 | HL1 | HL2 |
2 | HL2 | HL2 | HL2 | HL2 |
3 | HL2 | HL2 | HL2 | HL3 |
4 | HL3 | HL3 | HL3 | HL3 |
EN 45545-2 defines the requirements and the tests for a particular product. The definition of the requirements considers in which conditions the products are used (accessible / inaccessible area, inside / outside); in fact, the fire behavior of the products depends on their own nature, but also on their application.
intreXis power supplies comply with the requirements defined by EN 45545-1, EN 45545-2 2013, and the most strict 'Hazard Level'.
Hence, intreXis power supplies can be used for all the railway operation categories and design categories, ensuring the highest reliability!
